Overview of the play:

The director, Abbe, writes: “Seventeen is a unique play by Australian writer Matthew Whittet. I really liked this play when I saw it at the Lyric Hammersmith last year and I think it will work really well at the Pump House. In it, adult actors play a gang of confused adolescents in a playground drama set on the last day of school, with the teenagers celebrating the end of their exams. This original casting quirk adds an extra layer of hope and sadness to all these wonderful characters because older actors bring their own life experience to them. There’s a real free-wheeling exhuberance about the play so I think it has the potential to be a really fun production to work on. There is also a depth to the play because under the booze and banter, we gradually see the insecurity and buried emotions of these partying teenagers and we know that this play is portraying a pivotal moment in their young lives. They’re all on the cusp of adulthood. I also think the fact that it connects the generations is such a positive aspect of it and hopefully our audiences will come out feeling thoroughly entertained.”

Characters and descriptions:

All actors can be aged 30s to 50s but need to be able to convincingly play teenagers.

Mike – noisy and raucous. He effortlessly dominates the gang

Tom – more timorous and thoughtful. Mike’s side-kick. Has an unresolved longing for Jess

Jess – a vivacious, bright-eyed charmer. Mike’s girlfriend. She holds sway over her best mate Emilia

Emilia – Jess calls her “the frigid princess”. Thoughtful, intelligent and level-headed

Ronny – lonely and left out. He senses he doesn’t fit in

Lizzy – Mike’s high energy younger sister who desperately wants to be part of her brother’s older gang. She’s a mix of irritant and sage.
