The Breath Of Life
By David Hare
To be directed by Maggi Harvey
A gem of a play, written by a master of modern theatre. The play covers a period
of 24 hours in which two women meet; Frances the wife and Madeleine the mistress
of Martin, a man who has deserted both of them for a younger woman. Previously enemies,
the women now find common ground as they talk into the night and take stock of their
lives, specifically their years around Martin. Madeleine in particular, insists she
never wanted to be defined by the man in her life, but this is what has happened,
in slightly different ways, to each of them. As they continue in their conversation
they begin to discover a kind of comfort and strength, which may enable them to move
on to a more positive future.

terrifying achievement. The governess charged with the nurture and education of two young children in an old isolated house in the country becomes convinced that they are being haunted and corrupted by two evil spirits. She is alone in her belief, and as she fights desperately to save their souls she fears for her own safety, while James’ seductively raises doubts in the reader’s mind about the governess’s sanity. Are the ghosts merely a figment of her tortured imagination? This complex scenario reaches the most dramatic and frightening of climaxes. Beautifully constructed and chillingly realised, this tale is amongst the finest examples of the ghost story genre.
