Arthur Miller’s timeless classic about deep-rooted and dangerously illicit desire,  “A View from the Bridge” was first performed in 1956, when the United States was entering a period of great prosperity after the hardships of WW2. Immigrants were arriving in their droves from war- torn Europe in search of a new life, where hope, hard work and ambition could give them the longed-for American Dream. This production will give the play a modern staging twist with contemporary cultural references.

In Brooklyn, Longshoreman Eddie Carbone welcomes his wife Beatrice’s Sicilian immigrant cousins to the land of the free. But when one of them falls for Catherine, the beautiful niece that he and Beatrice have brought up as their own daughter, they discover that freedom comes at a price. Eddie’s jealous mistrust exposes a deep, unspeakable secret – one that drives him to commit the ultimate betrayal not only of his family but also the close-knit community in which they live, with devastating consequences.

The play was based on an apparently true story about a man who reported his wife’s relatives to immigration and was later killed by members of the community—a betrayal viewed as unforgivable. The story was told to Miller while living in Brooklyn, by a lawyer who worked with the Italian-American longshoremen community around the Red Hook waterfront.  The play focuses on themes of intense family loyalty and honour, and the violent consequences when that code was broken.
