Currently, it is a prescient time to perform this play in the present debate over assisted dying.
This is the new version in which the protagonist is female, but the issues dealt with remain in sharp focus. Should somebody be allowed to choose to die? What level of mental competence can be used to make such a choice? What are the consequences for society as a whole? A play that has always and will continue to provoke debate and discussion after the curtain call, yet still manages to be bitingly funny and very moving and even entertaining. All human life in its messy complexity is here along with empathy for Claire’s predicament and also for the medical profession and their care and compassion.
